Gender Balance among Graduates of UGC-funded Programmes

Using open data found on data.gov.hk, I explore the gender balance by academic year, level of study, and academic programme category for the graduate from programs funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC). The results are visualized in a Shiny app so that everyone can explore the data.

The app takes both an exploratory approach, where the user can explore the data freely, and an explanatory approach, where three key observations that were made when exploring the data are highlighted. These actionable insights aim at informing decision-makers: UGS programme leads or other policymakers. This project also highlights the importance of open data for democratic control of government-funded institutions and for informing the public and politicians.
